The Obama Administration and Rep. Bart Stupak called National Right to Life a liar for exposing plans to use taxpayer dollars to fund abortions under high-risk insurance pools created under Obamacare in Pennsylvania and New Mexico. Now, they are scrambling for cover.
Initially, an HHS mouthpiece claimed that the high-risk programs wouldn’t cover abortions. Now, HHS is backtracking, essentially admitting the National Right to Life claim is true and stating the administration will make certain that the programs do not fund abortions.
Well, this move has Planned Parenthood in a huff. PP President Cecile Richards says PP is “deeply disappointed that the administration has voluntarily and unnecessarily decided to impose limits on private funds used to purchase health insurance coverage for abortion care in the new high-risk insurance pools.” As usual, PP distorts the issue. There are no “private funds” involved in these programs, only federal tax dollars are used.
NARAL president, Nancy Keenan, is even more distressed. “To our dismay, the Obama administration just announced it will exclude abortion coverage in the temporary health-insurance pools that will transition us into the new health-care system. I am outraged that such a decision would come from a pro-choice president that we helped elect.”
Kudos to National Right to Life for exposing the plan.
Today’s news — another state, New Mexico, has been authorized by the Obama Administration to set up a high-risk insurance plan which covers abortion.
Douglas Johnson of National Right to Life says New Mexico state officials have put together a new $37 million high-risk pool which includes federal funding for elective abortions. The state insurance department’s website carries the elective abortion funding information.
Here’s the kicker. Former pro-life hero, Bart Stupak, claims that National Right to Life is “lying” about the Pennsylvania and New Mexico plans, citing the phony Executive Order that bought his vote.
So, here’s the key question: Who do you believe? Obama and Stupak? Or, National Right to Life? Easy answer.
It is the first proof that Obama’s assurances of no federal funding for abortion are phony, phony, phony.
The Obama Administration will give Pennsylvania $160 million to set up a new “high-risk” insurance program under a provision of Obamacare and has quietly approved a plan submitted by an appointee of Governor Edward Rendell (D) under which the new program will cover any abortion that is legal in Pennsylvania. The high-risk pool is one of the new programs created by the sweeping federal health care bill signed into law on March 23.
We knew the rhetoric was phony from the start, from assurances by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to the President’s useless Executive Order. President Obama will include funding of abortion and abortion coverage whenever and wherever possible in federal government programs.
The President worked overtime to ensure that his signature health care law would allow subsidies for abortion coverage and federal funding of abortions. Now his Administration is working behind the scenes to expand abortion using administrative decisions which he hopes will escape public notice. This is the first but will not be the last of Obama’s programs which will subsidize abortions.

In apparent recognition of how controversial his appointment of Donald Berwick is to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Obama issued a recess appointment to install his man to inflict the installation of Obamacare on American citizens.
“Donald Berwick is a one-man death panel,” says David O’Steen, head of National Right to Life. “While Americans may not remember the agency he heads, he will quickly become known as Obama’s rationing czar.”
A a blog posted a few weeks ago which can be read here describes the extreme views of Berwick on rationing and redistributing medicine while withholding lifesaving health care, views which should terrify the vulnerable.
Faced with the knowledge that Berwick would be grilled extensively on his outrageous views, Obama went through the back door to install him without confirmation by the Senate. Obama mouthpiece, Robert Gibbs, used the increasingly tiring and glib rationale that people wanting to know what Berwick actually thinks and what he will do are just making this “political.” If it isn’t George Bushs’ fault, then it’s just politics. Treating us all like dummies — again.
There are over 250 taxpayer-funded military base hospitals here and overseas. For years, Congress has prohibited the performance of abortions at these facilities. This pro-abortion Congress — with its friend and ally, Planned Parenthood — is working hard to reverse that position.
“It’s the recognition that reproductive health care for women is basic health care. The world has changed, and women play a larger role in the military,” says PP mouthpiece Cecile Richards, president of the organization.
Senator Roland Burris (D-IL) introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (S. 3454) that would overturn the ban on abortions at military base hospitals. The Burris amendment won by a 15-12 vote in the Senate Armed Services Committee with all Democrats except Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) supporting the amendment and all Republicans opposing it.
The bill now goes to the Senate floor where there will be an amendment to remove the Burris language. The House version of the bill maintains current law which prohibits abortions at military hospitals. Will this nightmare session of Congress ever end?
It’s official. The Wisconsin Right to Life PAC has endorsed both Scott Walker and Mark Neumann for Governor. Both Walker and Neumann have impeccable right-to-life positions and records. We would be thrilled to have either in the Governor’s office.
Tom Barrett, on the other hand, is a Doyle re-run — magnified — on right-to-life issues. Planned Parenthood has enthusiastically endorsed Barrett and can always count on him to support its deadly agenda. Don’t vote for Barrett if you care about protecting human life.
