Wisconsin Right to Life friend, Dr. David Prentice, is a wealth of information on the numerous successes for real patients with real diseases using adult stem cells. Adult stem cells are found virtually everywhere in the human body and no one has to die to retrieve them. Adult stem cells are not rejected because they contain the DNA of the patient from whom they are taken and then injected or implanted.
In his latest reports, Prentice talks about the following successes:
Scientists from Wake Forest and Mexico collaborated to grow urethras for five boys who had injury or needed repairs.
A long-term study finds that adult stem cells from a patient’s own fat tissue are safe for breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients.
A patient’s own adult stem cells have been used in Utah to help heal heart damage and to repair skin wounds and burns.
Not only is this exciting news for patients with a myriad of conditions, but each success builds the case against using life-destroying embryonic stem cells. Many thanks to Dr. Prentice for providing this valuable information on an ongoing basis.
Donald Berwick, an outspoken rationing proponent, appears to be on his way out as the President’s pick to implement Obamacare. Berwick became the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the chief implementer of Obamacare last year via a recess appointment by the President. What this means is that he was appointed without Senate confirmation while the Senate was in recess. A recess appointment is not permanent and without confirmation only lasts until the end of the year.
The President re-nominated Berwick in January. Politico reports that Senate Democrats have given up on trying to confirm Berwick after receiving a letter signed by 42 Republican Senators stating they would filibuster this nomination. Pro-life groups have deluged Congress and the White House with opposition to Berwick because of his favorable statements on rationing of health care. At a November Senate committee hearing, Berwick tried to back away from his pro-rationing statements, but the damage was already done.
Score one for opponents of rationing. So long Berwick.
The big gun the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) uses to justify its claim to taxpayer funds is that abortions will increase if family planning taxpayer dollars are cut off. Writing in The Daily Beast, Kirsten Powers demolished this myth by citing a 10-year study in Spain which showed that “as overall contraceptive use increased… the elective abortion rate more than doubled.”
Powers also cites a January 2011 fact sheet from the Guttmacher Institute (formerly the research arm of Planned Parenthood) which “listed all the reasons that women who have had an abortion give for their unexpected pregnancy, and not one of them is lack of access to contraception.”
Powers concludes: “To preserve its federal subsidy, Planned Parenthood continues to claim that without its contraception services the abortion rate will go up. This deception smacks of a fleecing of taxpayers in an effort to promote an ideological agenda, rather than a sincere effort to help women plan families.”
Kudos to Powers for having the intellectual honesty to expose the PPFA myth for what it is — a blatant attempt to continue to build the PPFA abortion empire at taxpayer expense.
Wisconsin Right to Life strongly supports efforts in Washington and Madison to prohibit taxpayer dollars from going to organizations like Planned Parenthood that are abortion providers. It’s far past time to stop feeding the abortion giant.
“Governor Walker Eliminates Women’s Health Program and Rolls Back Women’s Rights,” blares Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. “Walker Walks All Over Rights of Wisconsin Women,” says RH Reality Check. Not to be outdone, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin’s headline is “Governor Walker Launches Attack on Women’s Health.”
The Continuing Resolution passed by Congress this week eliminates all $327 million in funding for Title X, a program from which Planned Parenthood receives significant federal taxpayer dollars, and also an amendment that defunds preventive health services at Planned Parenthood. Governor Walker in his two-year budget cut Title V funds from which Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin receives millions in state taxpayer dollars.
Get used to the rhetoric above — it will become a huge rallying cry as Planned Parenthood whines about loss of federal and state taxpayer dollars. Television commercials are already in the works to oppose the cuts.
No one should take the actions by the Congress and Governor Walker for granted. Wisconsin Right to Life will work at every turn with federal and state legislators to ensure that these cuts remain.
Planned Parenthood is getting a bit unruffled after the House passed the Pence Amendment to stop federal tax dollars from going to PP and their affiliates. Even though the amendment will have a much harder time getting passed in the U.S. Senate, the nation’s largest abortion provider is taking no chances.
Life News reported this week that Planned Parenthood is rolling out a new television commercial to encourage members of the Senate to support the continued flow of federal taxpayer dollars into their coffers. They plan to spend $200,000 to run their commercials in the District of Columbia.
As National Review writer Jim Geraghty observed, “You know, folks, if you can afford to spend $200,000 on television ads, maybe you don’t need all of that federal funding.”
Planned Parenthood has gotten used to receiving massive amounts of other people’s money to fund their federal and state operations. But the drumbeat to stop the flow of our hard-earned federal and state tax dollars to this reprehensible organization is getting louder and louder and can be heard in Congress, in Wisconsin and countless other states.
As Congress grapples with this issue, there will be several opportunities here in Wisconsin during this legislative session to finally prohibit Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers from receiving YOUR state taxpayer dollars. Wisconsin Right to Life will continue to be in the forefront of stopping this blatant misuse of our tax dollars. Stay tuned!
