Late-Term Abortions in Madison?
Today's Update:
Madison Loses on Home Turf --
No Second Trimester Abortions
December 15, 2010 -- When announced earlier this year that the Madison Surgery Center had been abandoned as the site for second trimester abortions, UW tried to keep the issue alive by saying it was looking for a new location. Turns out it was a false front, as we thought all along.
UW spokesperson Lisa Brunette finally admitted that the entire plan has been abandoned. "UW Health is not currently looking for another location that would be safer for patients and does not have plans to look in the future," she told the Badger Herald.
What a bitter pill for Madison, the pro-abortion bastion of the state, to swallow. Defeated on their home turf.
What a fantastic victory for unborn children! There are not enough words to thank the citizens of Wisconsin who rose up to defeat this plan. Power and strength comes from the people, and in this case, the people made unborn babies and mothers the winners!

UW Holds Late-Term Abortions as Badge of Honor and an Important Politically Correct Agenda for Madison
"Despite the flurry of statements and denials regarding abandonment of the late-term abortion plan at the Madison Surgery Center, there are no surprises here," said Barbara Lyons, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life. "It is no surprise that UW is committed to finding another location for late-term abortions. To them, it is the politically correct thing to do."
A series of emails exchanged between parties involved in developing the late-term abortion plan were made public. In November of 2008, Dr. Fredrik Broekhuizen of Planned Parenthood chided Drs. Laurel Rice and Caryn Dutton of UW, saying: "...I really think the Madison physician community should step up to the plate...What is wrong with this picture? If Madisonians consider themselves so progressive and that's how they often talk, why can't they do this walk?" This was in response to concerns raised by Dutton who said: "Dr. Rice and I are trying to be advocates within these institutions, and I think the vast majority of ObGyns in town are supportive, but other specialties and departments are terrified of having abortion happening in their 'space.'"
"It is also no surprise that the Madison Surgery Center has been abandoned as the location for late-term abortions to be performed," continued Lyons. "The fact that the Madison Surgery Center has not performed a single late-term abortion, even though the plan was adopted in February of 2009, suggests that insurmountable obstacles prevented the plan from going forward at that facility," Lyons states.
Email exchanges and documents from the Madison Surgery Center describe deep division and dissension within that facility over the late-term abortion plan. Officials ask for counts on how many appointments and surgeries have been canceled and discuss ardent opposition to the plan by key medical professionals who utilize the Center.
"Thanks to the thousands of Wisconsin citizens who vehemently oppose this plan, it has been derailed at the first location," said Lyons. "Wisconsin Right to Life, those citizens, and the groups who kept up a constant stream of opposition are now alert and looking for the next move by UW officials. The abandonment of the Madison Surgery Center is one gigantic step forward but not the final one, and we will be there every step of the way."

UW Abandons Late-Term Abortion Plan at Madison Surgery Center
"It is a complete victory for unborn children who would have been victims of late-term abortions, their mothers, their families, the grassroots people who demanded that the late-term abortion plan be stopped, and the citizens of Wisconsin," said Barbara Lyons, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life in response to reports that the University of Wisconsin has abandoned plans to begin performing late-term abortions at the Madison Surgery Center.
The information that UW dropped the plan became available through a letter from the Department of Justice to an attorney in Eau Claire who asked for an investigation of UW for violating the law by promoting and being involved in the late-term abortion plan approved in February of 2009.
"Many individuals and organizations made this possible," continued Lyons, "by their calls, letters, emails, and presence outside the Madison Surgery Center. Special thanks and praise go to those who work at the Madison Surgery Center who refused to participate in any way in providing late-term abortions and individuals who courageously changed their doctors and insurance rather than be treated at the Madison Surgery Center."
Wisconsin Right to Life joined many other organizations in a coordinated effort to make certain that not a single late-term abortion would be performed at the Madison Surgery Center. "It was a gigantic effort that reached a successful conclusion – zero late-term abortions at the Madison Surgery Center," said Lyons.

Madison Late-Term Abortion Clinic - What You Can Do
On May 6th, 2009 Wisconsin Right to Life sponsored a sold-out event at the Inn on the Park in Madison that featured former late-term abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino and popular talk-show host Vicki McKenna. The focus of this huge event was the late-term abortion center at the Madison Surgery Center (MSC) and what all of us can do. Many of you attended that event.
Thanks to you and thousands of others, the center has yet to perform a single abortion! We want to keep it that way!
HERE ARE FOUR KEY ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:

- Help the Wisconsin Right to Life Education Fund place three half-page ads in the Wisconsin State Journal to keep the issue before the public.
The first ad will appear this Thursday, May 14 and is geared toward asking patients to say "NO" to medical treatment at the MSC. The second ad, which will appear on Thursday, May 21, concentrates on the psychological impact of dismemberment abortions on those who participate in them. The third ad, to appear on Thursday, May 28, focuses on what UW officials don't want the public to know about the proposed late-term abortion center.
- View the Wisconsin State Journal ads here.
Thanks to the generosity of the people who attended the event last week, sufficient funds were raised for the first two ads. We still need to raise $3200 for the third ad. Ideally, we would like to raise a total of $33,000 to match the dollars given to pro-abortion Gov. Jim Doyle by the "dean" of Wisconsin abortionists, Dennis Christensen and his wife.

- Be a witness outside the Madison Surgery Center - Vigil for Life is scheduling picketers to have a constant presence at the MSCenter. To volunteer to take a monthly or weekly shift, contact Steve at steve@vigilforlife.org
- If you are a patient at any of the UW health facilities, read and download the patient letter by clicking here. Fill it out and send to the UW health system telling them you will not receive current or future health care services at their facilities. Contact information is provided.
We must continue to put pressure on UW officials. These three key actions will greatly help in keeping the pressure up. Thank you and God bless you for all you have done.

Overview
Late-term abortions to be performed at Madison Surgery Center
In early February the various boards associated with UW Hospital and Clinics made the decision that late-term (second trimester) abortions will be performed at the Madison Surgery Center. While this is a setback, there is still much that can be done to convince them to reverse their decision.
What you can do
If you are a graduate of any of the UW campuses, contact Chancellor Carolyn "Biddy" Martin, who voted in favor of the plan. Messages can be
e-mailed to her at chancellor@news.wisc.edu
Or you can leave a phone message for Chancellor Martin at 608-262-9946. Her mailing address is 161 Bascom Hall, 500 Lincoln Drive, Madison, WI 53706. Please be polite but firm in your opposition to late-term abortions at Madison Surgery Center.
If you are a patient who uses a UW Hospital or Clinic, Meriter Hospital or Madison Surgery Center, a letter has been drafted (find it here) that you can send to officials of all of those organizations. All contact information for those officials is included in the letter.
Call the Madison Surgery Center at 608-287-2200 where the late-term abortions will be performed. You will reach the receptionist who played no role in making the decision and who is merely the messenger. Please keep that in mind when you call. It is possible that the receptionist will refer you to another number to leave your message.
If you are a physician, please consider doing what some physicians have done - inform UW Hospital and Clinics, Meriter Hospital and Madison Surgery Center that you will no longer refer patients to those entities. Here is contact information for those entities.

Associated Press Story Reveals UW Officials Planned Late-Term Abortion Procedures for Weeks
- Motives Are Money and Secrecy
Released: Friday, January 30, 2009
"Today's Associated Press story regarding the controversial and horrendous plan for late-term abortions to be performed at the Madison Surgery Center indicates that money and secrecy were the motivators," stated Barbara Lyons, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life. "The power point developed by UW officials detailing the 'benefits' of the plan states that 'increased departmental revenue' was at the top of the list."
The story also indicates that secrecy was a major part of the discussion. "If this plan is such an important and necessary 'service,' as they describe it, why did it have to be kept secret from employees who will be dramatically impacted by adding late-term abortions to their place of employment," commented Lyons. "Why are employees from doctors to nurses to receptionists so opposed to the plan and fearful of losing their jobs?"
"This plan should and must be defeated for the sake of patients, medical professionals, and the status and reputation of the UW Health community. And, of course, for the unborn children who would be destroyed at the Madison Surgery Center," said Lyons.
